Description

The UK construction industry is one of the worst-hit sectors of the economy in the current recession and winning work is harder than ever.  It is clear now that construction companies increasingly value the powerful role of good socially responsible practices in order to win work.  CSR has now made its way into the mainstream of business practices and companies which are expanding their socially responsible business practices into their core business activities are now leading the way.

Although the Coalition Government promotes ‘The Big Society’ the notion of transferring responsibility, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has been around for a while now. We are all familiar with household names, famous for being responsible and who set themselves apart on the basis of being ethical investors and serving local communities. We are all aware, also, that some large oil companies have suffered knocks to their reputation and their finances through lapses in health and safety and environmental performance. These examples indicate how being socially responsible can generate competitive advantage and, by contrast, how bad publicity can ruin years of hard work. But how does a business become socially responsible?

A CSR toolkit has been developed by CCI as a guideline for construction companies: it has been designed to help organisations evaluate and adopt their socially responsible business practices through a strategic approach – Diagnose, Plan, Implement, Impact and Improve. It is a simple and easy to use tool-kit to help an organisation evaluate and adapt their business practices in relation to the environment, workplace and the marketplace. The seminar is designed to introduce small businesses to the toolkit to enable its further exploration and to look at a range of successful case studies that can help you become a socially responsible company.
